Listen folks the NFL hears you loud and clear. A lot of people have voiced their displeasure with the fairness of the sudden death OT rule. For now, they have at least ammended those rules for the playoffs. Yes, I agree it is weird that it is only for the playoffs, but I think that will change. In fact, the Commissioner said today, that after further analysis he thinks it will include the regular season.
You want to know what I think of the new rule? I love it, especially when they extended it to the regular season. To be honest who the heck wants to be in OT anyway? I mean as a player you really don’t ever want to put yourself in that position. But alas, the biggest victory I ever played in, went to OT. Go figure. Let me take you back to the 1999 NFC Championship for a moment. Under the new rule, after Morten Andersen makes our FG, the Vikings would get the ball. Yes, we could have tried for a touchdown to win, thus not allowing the Vikings a shot to win. If you’re still lost, a field goal no longer means you’ve won in the post season. A touchdown ends the game, but just a FG, and your opponent has a shot. We would have never wanted that high powered Vikings offense back on the field.
When I was drafted into the NFL, sudden death was expected. Essentially you prayed that the coin toss went your way, and that you did enough to win. The new rules will make the games more exciting in the playoffs. Everybody loves it when teams have to go for it, under this scenario teams will certainly have to consider it. One thing I certainly did NOT want to see implemented was the College OT rules. Some of the OT games in college are simply dreadful because they are to long. Thankfully, we will not have to deal with that.
