Today Nike unveiled a new ad featuring Tiger Woods. This only would garner substantial buzz because Woods has few sponsors that have stood behind him so loyally. The real reason everyone will be talking about the ad is because Tiger’s Dad, Earl Woods, is really the star of the commercial.
Shoot in black and white, zooming in and out of a solo shoot of Tiger Woods, Earl Woods can be heard asking Tiger a series of questions. Each question is vague, but clearly can be connected to Tiger’s recent controversies.
Personally, I love the commercial. As the son of a deceased father who was very instrumental in my career, I certainly relate. I am sure many people will hate it, and hate Nike for rolling out a Woods commercial this soon. I have a bit of a different take. As a somewhat high profile person who created my own bit of negative press a year ago, the first person at my side was my Dad. I ended up losing my Dad one year ago this week, but I speak to him often. For me, the commercial makes perfect sense. Earl Woods, more than any other person is responsible for who, and how Tiger Woods is today. IF you are going to roll out an ad/commecial this early, you’ve got to make Tiger Woods human again. No hype, no celebrations, no color, just a man who appears as defeated and serious as the rest of us.
